Credits: 3 Introduces the basics of music theory. Course designed to help the beginning music student, or those students with limited background in music theory, study the basic elements of music. Topics include notation, rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, beginning level melodic and rhythm dictation, ear-training and sight singing skills.

It is important that you view ALL notes pertaining to your course.MUS1000 introduces you to the language of music with the goal of achieving basic musical literacy. The course covers introductory-level music theory and ear-training, including clef reading, pitch and rhythmic notation, intervals, scales, key signatures, harmony, ear training and sight singing. The final project is to compose a simple blues, folk or popular song.
Though it is not required to have previous experience with music, it will be helpful for students to have participated in music in some capacity. Examples might be participating in a musical ensemble like choir, band, or orchestra, or to have at least some limited experience playing an instrument like the piano or guitar.
