ENV1010 – Natural Disasters: SC2Credits: 3
Credits: 3 This course introduces the different types of natural disasters that occur around the globe and what can be done to mitigate the risks of being in an area that is prone to natural hazards. The scientific advances that have been made towards understanding, predicting, and preparing for natural disasters are reviewed. Anthropogenic (human created) changes to the different Earth systems that may be increasing the frequency and severity of natural disasters are also explored.
The importance of understanding the science behind natural disasters lies in the fact that almost every area on the planet is subject to being impacted by a disastrous event from severe storms to earthquake and volcanic eruptions. Increasingly, natural disasters are impacting not just physical locations but are causing economic problems in the form of costs associated with clean up and mitigation. City and community planners must be able to perform risk assessment for the unique disasters that can occur in their location and be able to prepare their communities. Individuals must understand how to handle the natural disasters that can strike and what they can do mitigate loss of life and property.
