Accuplacer® Assessments
All Colorado community colleges require most students to take an
Accuplacer® English and math assessment before registering. The
purpose of the assessment is to identify which English or math course
you should begin with to maximize your academic success. The Accuplacer®
assessment is administered by computer and measures reading, writing/sentence
skills, and algebra skills. The assessment is not timed, but generally
takes about 2 hours to complete. Placement scores are valid for
two years.
You can arrange to take the Accuplacer through the testing center at your Home College, or by arranging to take the test at another approved testing site. Contact your Home College or Jennifer Frank (advising@ccconline.org) for more information.
Minimum scores for the Accuplacer test are as
follows: Reading Comprehension - 80, Sentence Skills - 95, Elementary
Algebra - 85.
Do I have to take the assessment?
Unless you meet the exemption
criteria (below), you will need to take the Accuplacer®
assessment IF
- You are a first-time student*
enrolled in a degree program (Associate of Arts, Associate of
Science, Associate of General Studies, or Associate of Applied
Science).
- You are registered for any college
level English or mathematics course.
- Your assessment scores are more
than two years old.
- You are 17, 18, or 19 years old.
*First time students are those who enter the college for the first
time with no previous post-secondary experience (e.g., freshmen
who have not previously attended college) or those seeking a degree,
regardless of previous post-secondary experience, at the time they
enroll in a degree program. Students who have taken college classes
while in high school may also be considered first-time students.
How do I know if I am exempt from assessment?
You are exempt from taking the Accuplacer®assessment IF
- You enroll in a certificate
program, unless you seek to enroll in college-level English or
math courses.*
- You have earned a Bachelor or
Associate's degree.
- You have previously been assessed
with the Accuplacer ®, Compass ®, or Asset® Tests at a public
post-secondary institution within the last two years and have
appropriate scores.
- You have successfully completed
basic-skills instruction in mathematics, writing or reading, then
you are exempt from any further assessment in that subject area
only. See your advisor to determine if you meet these criteria.
- You have successfully completed
a college-level course equivalent to English Composition, ENG
121 or above, and then you are exempt from the requirement for
assessment in English and reading.
- You have successfully completed
a college-level course in mathematics equivalent to College Algebra,
MAT 121 or above, and then you are exempt from the requirement
for assessment in mathematics.
- You are a current high school student.
