Open Educational Resources

What are Open Educational Resources, or OER?

According to the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, open educational resources are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others. OER may include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.

What is an OER Course at CCCOnline?

Currently, CCCOnline offers over 60 OER Courses.  If you are enrolled in an OER course at CCCOnline, you will have no textbook fee. You still may be required to purchase other learning materials, such as a lab kit, microscope, hardware, software, calculator, etc.

Will I still have a textbook?

Maybe! Our OER courses are full of the most current content available, curated specifically to the course you’re taking. Sometimes that involves a free, downloadable OER textbook, but other times it does not.

Will these OER materials fit my accommodation?

All the content used in our courses is accessible.

What are the technology requirements for an OER course?

The technology requirements for an OER course are the same as all of our courses.  You may get 24x7 student support by visiting help.cccs.edu or calling 1-888-800-9198.
