English

You may speak it, read it and hear it every day, but do you really know English? Can you gather your thoughts, put them in order and then write an essay that will enlighten, inform, entertain, convince, persuade or engage your reader? How are your vocabulary, spelling and grammar?

To succeed in college and at work, you need to communicate effectively! CCCOnline English classes will help you do this by strengthening your writing and critical-thinking skills. You will read and discuss the work of other writers — fiction and non-fiction. You will learn how to research an idea, write a cohesive essay, and revise your work to achieve the important goal of communicating to your reader.

Your CCCOnline English instructors will help you find your own voice and use it effectively. Our courses are centered around you — the learner — and focused on more than just grammar and punctuation. We encourage students to use writing as a way to be introspective, analyze their own thoughts and grow personally through their own expression.

Developmental English

If writing isn’t your strength or if you’ve been out of high school for a while, you may find yourself taking developmental English classes to bring your English skills up to college level. Your score on the English section of the Accuplacer® placement test will determine whether you need a refresher in English or whether you’re ready for college-level work.

What is the Accuplacer®?

All Colorado community colleges require most students to take an Accuplacer® English and math assessment before registering. The purpose of the assessment is to identify which English or math course you should begin with to maximize your academic success. The Accuplacer® assessment is administered by computer and measures reading, writing/sentence skills, and algebra skills. The assessment is not timed, but generally takes about 2 hours to complete. Placement scores are valid for two years.

You can arrange to take the Accuplacer® through the testing center at your Home College, or by arranging to take the test at another approved testing site. Contact CCCOnline's advisor for assistance.

For more information on the Accuplacer® take a look at the  CCCOnline Assessments Information page.

If you do end up in developmental English, you will thank yourself later for taking the classes. If you’re not prepared to do college-level writing, the rest of your college classes will be difficult! Strong writing skills will keep you on your path to a college degree and success. Developmental English will help you gain those skills and prepare you to move on to college-level English classes.

Guaranteed Transfer Courses

If you go on to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree, you can transfer the credits you earn in CCCOnline's ENG 121 English Composition I and ENG 122 English Composition II classes as part of the statewide guaranteed (gt) transfer curriculum (gtPathways). Those classes are required for most associate and bachelor’s degree programs in Colorado – regardless of the degree area. While CCCOnline does not offer a degree program in English itself, you can use the credits you earn through your online classes or associate's degree toward an English degree at any four-year college or university in the state.
