he ability to perform essential work in a disaster requires skills in emergency operations and management. Floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, train wrecks, and hazardous chemical spills are all examples of public emergencies in which life and property are endangered. How well a community or an organization prepares for and deals with these and other kinds of disasters can affect not only their economic viability but people's lives.
Professionals in this field can be federal, state or local government officials; employed by volunteer organizations or the private sector. They work to minimize the effects of disasters on the public through prevention, public education, planning, and effective response operations. They must be effective problem solvers, decision makers and communicators. They must work well with all kinds of people in crisis situations.
