Computer Technology

To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer.
-- Farmers' Almanac, 1978 --

Technology is moving us forward – fast! Almost every part of our daily lives involves a computer or some gadget that enables us to do something more quickly than we could without it. Every company today – large and small – uses computers, e-mail and the Internet.

Someone needs to invent, install, operate and repair all of that technology AND help people learn how to use it!

Opportunities for people who know computer technology – inside and out – are everywhere. However, employers don’t want just any nerd who can install a printer. More and more, companies are looking for people with college degrees or certification in specialized technology areas like A+; Network+; Novell CNE, Microsoft MCTS and MCITP, Cisco CCNA, and the National Association of Communications Systems Engineers (NACSE) NANS certifications. In our CCCOnline Computer Technology program you can prepare yourself to be one of those knowledgeable people.

What can CCCOnline do for me?

All 13 of our partner colleges offer a variety of degrees and certificates in the technology field. Check with your home college first to see which program works best for your needs and take classes through CCCOnline. You can choose from two different career paths in Computer Technology. Each path is described here:

PATH 1 — A.S. Degree in Computer Information Systems

Picture of an information highway.A full-time student can expect to complete the 63 credit-hours for an Associate of Science degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) in about two years. In this vocational degree program, you will learn to use computers as a tool in the business environment, including management, programming, and operations. When you graduate, you’ll have a solid foundation in business and information technology that will help you qualify for entry-level jobs in business or for specialized positions like junior programmer, computer operator, systems analyst trainee, computer salesperson, user support, documentation specialist, or data librarian.

If you want to keep going beyond the associate-degree level with your education, there are many 4-year instituions that will transfer the community-college credits you earn to a Bachelor of Science Degree program. Where you could complete your last two years and earn your Bachelor of Science degree.

PATH 2 — Certificate in Computer Network Technology

If you’re more interested in the actual computer than the Associate of Science Degree program, then Computer Network Technology (CNG) might be exactly what you want.

Picture of a woman in a server room with network connections. The Computer Network Technology (CNG) program prepares you for jobs in the computer network field. As a student in this program, you’ll learn about computer hardware, software, and operating systems and gain hands-on experience with networks. When you complete the program successfully, you are prepared to take the certification exams for A+, Network+, Novell CNE, Microsoft MCTS and MCITP, Cisco CCNA, and the National Association of Communications Systems Engineers (NACSE) NANS. With these certifications, you will meet the competency standards for network specialists in the computer industry.

Please note: Windows Server 2008 is now being offered at CCCOnline. As of Fall 2009, the MCSE Certificate Program will no longer be offered through CCCOnline. Please speak to the Program Chair, if you have questions regarding this change.

The Cisco CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician) certification validates the skills required for entry-level network support positions, the starting point for many successful careers in networking. Candidates in this program will gain the knowledge and skills to install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. CCENT certification is the first step toward achieving CCNA, which covers medium size enterprise branch networks with more complex connections.
